This is the day which marked the end of summer and harvest. The Celts believed that on the night of October 31, ghosts of the dead would return to earth. The Celts celebrated Samhain by dressing up in costumes with animal heads and having bonfires. Many Celts settled in Britain and Ireland, where the festival became popular. 　　Nowadays, most people celebrate Halloween but only for fun. They are not worried about ghosts. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.
